Updating the planning of pillar stabilisation to the digital age

Ready

Pillar stabilisation is a method developed for improving the stability of the soil structure. The project tested how a plan based on a data model can be transferred to the work machinery.

What kind of problem is the project trying to solve?

The project tested how the pillar stabilisation plan can be transferred from the Inframodel format to the work machinery. Pillar stabilisation is used to improve the bearing capacity of soil. It is carried out on soil that has poor bearing capacity and usually a high clay content. Better bearing capacity is achieved when binding materials are mixed into the soil, creating a pillar-shaped structure. This gives the soil material the desired stability and bearing capacity.

The infrastructure sector is making goal-oriented progress towards data model-based planning and construction. The standardisation group of BuildingSMART Finland has been developing an Inframodel information transfer format whose latest version also allows the direct information transfer from a data model to the machine control in pillar stabilisation.

Objective: "Testing the data model in the test environment"

The experiment produced a model for machine control for the machine control system of a pillar stabilisation machine based on a data model for pillar stabilisation created in a design system. For the purposes of the experiment, a test environment (the terrain and surfaces in the soil model and a plan for pillar stabilisation) and a simulation environment for the machine control system were created in the design system.

 Who benefits?

The development of activities based on a data model is aimed at more efficient production and savings throughout the life cycle of the construction project.
