Building classifier – a new tool

Statistics Finland has updated its building classification dating back to 1994 to provide a better match for today's building types. This project will also implement a building classification tool based on the updated classification. This new electronic tool will, among other things, guide a planning permission applicant in the choice of the correct building class.

The users of the building classification include the Population Register Centre’s building and apartment register. The classification has been updated in collaboration with users on the basis of a stakeholder survey. Rather than making significant changes in the current classification structure, the objective is providing a better response to customer needs through technology use. New descriptions of building classes will be added, and old ones will be complemented. In the future, the building classification tool will recognise typical divisions into different spaces, which have a bearing on the building's classification.

The building classification tool will save labour in municipal building supervision services and improve the quality of building data in the Population Register Centre’s file. Over the long term, the results will also improve the quality of statistics.
