BIM as a learning tool

Ready

Building information models would be useful in interactive learning of architecture and construction technology, especially if other learning material could also be combined with them. This project created a prototype of a learning environment based on information models.

What kind of problem was the project trying to solve?

A BIM, or a building information model, contains a 3D presentation and a visualisation of the physical world in virtual reality. A BIM could therefore be used as a tool for interactive learning. A BIM would be useful, for example, in architectural, engineering, construction technology and property management studies. Learning would also be facilitated by the possibility to examine the model and the content of the textbook simultaneously in the learning platform.

Objective: to create an online learning platform based on BIMs

The experimental project created the InBookModE learning platform, which enables its users to design buildings and learn construction technology by using BIMs. The learning platform also contains supplementary technologies, such as interactive e-books.

Users can use the InBookModE application to draw up books, reports and case studies integrated into BIMs. This enables readers to navigate and study the models and the content of the book simultaneously, which makes learning from a specific case easier.

An InBookModE prototype and the first sample book and case report were realised in the project. The content of the InBookModE was tested with students and professionals of the sector and its usability and usefulness as an interactive learning platform was assessed. The first pilot studies were implemented in January 2018.

Who benefits?

Students of architecture, construction technology, engineering and property management.
