Opening up building information
The objective of KIRA-digi is to harmonise building information stored in public registers and to make it available for all through digital means. The digital leap in the built environment and construction sector requires that information held by the authorities should be easily accessible for use by various actors in their daily work. Smooth information management also facilitates innovation and business.
What kind of problem is this project trying to solve?
A great deal of information is generated on a property throughout its life cycle, which starts with the investment decision and ends with the recycling of its demolition waste. Information concerning buildings is needed in numerous decision-making and operating processes, but currently such information is poorly available. Information is saved repetitively and with slight variations in its content in several public administration and private sector systems. Basic information on buildings is held by the municipalities, the Population Register Centre and the Tax Administration. Property maintenance activities also generate information that is kept by the owners or the property management companies.
What is done in this project portfolio?
Open access to building information is promoted through cooperation between various administrative branches and projects. There are several projects working on definitions for building information. The key challenge facing KIRA-digi is to make the information management solutions being developed by various parties interoperable.
Harmonising building information and making it accessible to everyone requires that the information content on buildings be standardised. Part of the harmonisation undertaken by KIRA-digi involves defining the core information content on buildings, i.e. the minimum information on a building that users in most cases need. The responsibilities for generating and sharing information are also defined at the same time. Shared interfaces for the minimum information are being prepared in cooperation with the Population Register Centre.
Open access to building information is also supported by work under KIRA-digi on the overall architecture in the built environment, on the standardisation road map and on terminology in the construction sector.
